ANDRONIC Livy (Livius Andronicus)

Livius Andronicus, Lucius; Livius Andronicus, Lucius, ca. 284-OK. 204 years. BC. e., the first Roman poet, a Greek by origin. After the capture of Tarentum, the Romans in 272 g. prisoner was brought to Rome. Nobile was a teacher of his sons, among them Lucia Libya Salinatora, which freed him and as a patron gave his name. - With the didactic work of L. A. was directly related to his early literary career. To his students he translated into Latin Odyssey by Homer, using the Saturnian verse. This book has long been the standard textbook for the Romans native language. From translation L. A. preserved only fragments. The main area of literary activity L. A. was dramatic work. In September, 240 g. during the Ludi Romani L. A. first in Rome has put Greek tragedy and comedy in a Latin treatment, so 240 g. BC. e. usually regarded as the birth date of Roman literature.

L. A. handled primarily tragedy. From his works preserved fragments and the names of tragedies: Achilles, Aegisthus, Ajax-bearer (Aiax mastigoforus), Andromeda, Danae, Trojan Horse (Equos Troianus), Hermione, Theseus and the vague name of Ino. Example of L. A. served as a Greek tragedy in V. BC. e. (Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides). From comedy creativity L. A. survived almost 6 passages and the names of comedies called fabula palliata: Gladiolus (Gladiolus), Actor (Ludius) and a vague title Verpus or Vargus (cut or bandy-legged), or even a Virgo (Virgin). In addition to handling the Greek dramas, L. A. also studied directing and acting business. 207 g., to appease angry gods, he wrote at the request of board of priests parfenion the Greek model, that is a song for chorus girls, performed in the temple of Juno, reigning in the Aventine. L. A. create a poetic language of drama, epic and lyric. In gratitude for the contribution L. A. was given to the temple of Minerva on the Aventine Hill, there to meet for common prayer and the decisions of different issues actors and poets, writers for the stage.
