Biography Uspensky Gleb Ivanovich
Uspensky Gleb Ivanovich (1843 - 1902), writer. Born on October 13 (25 NS) in Tula in the family official. Children passed in calm atmosphere of goodwill, among loving family people. At an early age read fairy tales and poems of Pushkin, Lermontov, read Karamzin.

In 1853 began to study in the Tula school, but, in connection with the transfer of his father in Chernihiv chamber, completes the gymnasium course in the Chernigov High School in 1861. The first literary efforts include a year studying in school.

Arrives at St. Petersburg University's law faculty, but after the student revolts and in connection with material difficulties certified in the same year. In 1862 he entered Moscow University, but studied only a year, as it failed to pay tuition fees, and was forced to. He worked as a proofreader in a printing. In 1864, after the death of his father had to take care of four sisters and three brothers.

In 1862 he published the first stories of the Assumption "Idyll" and "Mihalich". The writer finds support in the magazines "Russian word" and "Contemporary". Crucial to the literary fate of the Assumption was his acquaintance with Nekrasov, appreciated his talent, his knowledge of life and observation. He has published in "Contemporary," the first major product of the Assumption "Manners Rasteriaieff Street" (1866). Later, when instead of a closed government "Contemporary Nekrasov took over the publication of" Notes of the Fatherland ", Assumption again became its permanent staff. There were published essays and short stories "The first apartment," "Need a song sings," On the back stairs "and others.

In 1869 - 71 was written in the second major work - "Ruin". Assumption was close to the figures of the Populist movement - N. Mikhailovsky, P. Lavrov, V. Figner, etc.. Important role in the development of relations with the revolutionaries of the writer folk-played his trips abroad in 1872 and 1875 - 76. About a year living in Paris, where everything is still reminiscent of the Commune of 1871 and the massacre of revolutionaries. What he saw the place of execution shocked the writer. In Paris, Assumption met Turgenev, their friendships and then did not stop. Overseas experiences are reflected in a number of essays and short stories ( "guilty conscience", "From a commemorative book," the foreign diary of a provincial, etc.).

In the 1870's Assumption, studying the life of post-reform villages, long lived in the villages. The result of these visits was a series of essays "From the village diary" (1877 - 80). According to the author, the peasants "as long retain its strong and gentle type, as long as it prevails over the power of the earth ...".

In 1884 the government closed down the "Notes of the Fatherland". For Assumption start time of wandering: the Caucasus, Siberia, Volga, Ukraine, Novgorod and Samara forest steppe. But in these new experiences, he sees nothing comforting, it all seems bleak. There comes a disease. Literary activity ceases to bring him joy, but in 1885 published the famous story of "straightening" and in 1888 - not least the famous "Living digits". Since 1892 the writer was in the St. Petersburg Psychiatric Hospital. There he died on March 24 (April 6, NS), 1902.
