ANDROPOV Yuri Vladimirovich (1914 - 1984) Born 2 (15) June 1914. Averaged over the village in the Stavropol Territory in the family of the railway, early left without a father.

After the seven years worked as an assistant projectionist at the railway club on the station Mozdok, working in the telegraph office, a sailor of the river fleet. In 1936 he graduated from the Rybinsk Water Transport College, studied at the University of Petrozavodsk. Later he graduated from the Higher Party School of the Central Committee. In 1936 started the Komsomol career Andropov, the apex of which was the first secretary of the Central Committee of Komsomol of Karelia (1940-44). Since 1939 member of the CPSU (b). During the war of 1941-45 took part in the guerrilla movement in Karelia. In 1944, Andropov transferred to party work, was the second secretary of the Petrozavodsk city party committee, then the second secretary of the Communist Party of Karelia. In 1956, Andropov insisted that the Soviet invasion of Hungary, and then played an active role in suppressing the uprising against the communist regime in Hungary.

After the events in Hungary, Andropov headed the department of the socialist countries of the Central Committee of the CPSU (1957-67), was secretary of the CPSU Central Committee (1962-67). In 1964, Andropov was involved in the displacement of H. S. Khrushchev. Since 1967 - Chairman of the KGB. During 15 years of his leadership of the state security organs have significantly enhanced and expanded its control over all spheres of public life and society. One of the main activities of the KGB was a fight with dissident movement. Under Andropov conducted trials of the defenders, used various methods of suppressing dissent, practiced various forms of extrajudicial persecution (such as compulsory treatment in psychiatric hospitals).

At the initiative of Andropov began the expulsion of dissidents. Thus, in 1974, was sent abroad and then deprived of citizenship of a writer. I. Solzhenitsyn. In 1980, Academician A. D. Andropov was a supporter of the most decisive measures against the countries of the socialist camp, which sought to pursue an independent domestic and foreign policy. In late 1979, Andropov supported the proposal to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and in 1980 insisted on carrying out military action against Poland. In 1974 he became a Hero of Socialist Labor, and in 1976 he was awarded the rank of Army General. In November 1982, Andropov was elected General Secretary of the CPSU. In the first months of his reign he proclaimed a policy aimed at socio-economic transformation. However, the changes were limited to administrative measures, strengthening of labor discipline, exposing corruption in the inner circle of the ruling elite. Political and economic system remained steadfast. Moreover, ideological control and repression against dissidents intensified. In foreign policy has intensified confrontation with the West. However, Andropov sought to strengthen his personal power. Since June 1983, he combines the post of general secretary with the head of State - Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. But he remained in office just over a year. The last months of his life, Andropov was forced to govern from the Kremlin hospital ward.
