ACPD, PET (Conroy, Pat) (p. 1945), American writer. Born October 26, 1945 in Atlanta (pc. Georgia). At the insistence of his father, a naval officer personnel, entered the military academy, 'Citadel' in Charleston (pc. South Carolina), from which he graduated in 1967. Cadet wrote and published in a small publishing house in Virginia, his first book, "barracking" (The Boo), in lyrical tone recreates the life of the Academy in 1960.
First attracted the attention of the product Conroy became the book "Water extends far" (The Water Is Wide, 1972), based on the author's experience teaching black children in one of the offshore islands of South Carolina. Exposing racism, showing horrific living conditions of his students brought Conroy awarded the National Association of Educators.
The book's success made a professional writer Conroy. In 1976 comes "The Great Santini" (The Great Santini), an autobiographical novel about the childhood experiences. For years, held at the Academy, the writer returned to his next novel "guardians of the discipline" (The Lords of Discipline, 1980). The novel was filmed in 1983.
