Levitanskaya, Yuri DAVYDOVITCH (1922-1996), Russian poet, translator.

Born January 22, 1922 in the city Kozelec Chernihiv region in an assimilated Jewish family. Father - employee. The early years were spent in Kiev, where he moved with his family. Later, when his father found work at the mine, the family lived in a small mining town, then in Stalino (Donbass). He studied at the Ukrainian school.

By the school year include the first attempt at writing and publication in newspapers of Donbass.

After finishing school in 1939 Yu Levitanskaya sent to Moscow and became a student of the institute (Institute of philology, literature and history), one of the best schools in the country. At the same time with him in various courses taught D. Samoilov, P. Cogan, M. Kulchitsky, L. Ozerov, S. Narovchatov etc..

As a student who signed up for 3 year, Yu Levitanskaya enjoyed exemption from military service, but already 22 June 1941 together with other students, he writes in the army as a volunteer. After the end of June was commissioned last exam, goes to the front. Some time was a machine gunner. Participated in the defense of Moscow, and ahead, he said, were 'North-West, Steppe and 2 First Ukrainian fronts, the battle on the Orel-Kursk Bulge, the capture of Kharkov, the crossing of the Dnieper, and then the Dniester and Prut'. The Great Patriotic War Yu Levitanskaya graduated in Czechoslovakia, having risen from private to lieutenant (in the military specialties - gunner, commander of the unit, a correspondent for the front of the newspaper).

In the same year Yu Levitanskaya transferred to Irkutsk, where he moved his parents. There, until the summer of 1947, when he finally got the order to demobilize, is the newspaper of the East Siberian Military District, then works as the head of the literary section of the Irkutsk Musical Comedy Theater.

In the early postwar years, Yu Levitanskaya is a prominent figure in local literary circles (starting from 1943, he published in magazines such as' Banner ',' Soviet soldier ',' Siberian Lights', 'Ogonek). Last lifetime book "blank verse" (1991) was awarded the State Prize of Russia for 1995. Yu Levitanskaya taking later recognized, however, does not exaggerate their own importance. But no matter how their work evaluated the poet himself, they are always well received by readers and listeners. Poems Yu Levitansky published abroad, they wrote several songs ( "Dialogue with the Christmas tree" and "Dream of the passing train," Nikitina, "Well, what with the fact that I was there:" B. Special place in the work of Yu Levitansky took poetic translation. Working in this area since the mid 50's, he tried among the poems of Armenian, Baltic, Moldovan poets find those where the understanding of the world to his own tune.
