Biography Trygve Lie
Halfdan Trygve Lie was born July 16, 1896 in Oslo, Norway, the son of Martin and Lee Huldy Arnesen. He studied at the University of Oslo, where in 1919 he received a law degree. November 8, 1921 he married Hjц?rdis Jorgensen. They had three children - Sissel, Guri and Mette. In 1911, Mr. Lee joined the youth organization of the Norwegian Labor Party. From 1919 to 1922 was Assistant Secretary of the Working Party, from 1922 to 1935 - legal adviser to the Norwegian Federation of Trade Unions, and in 1926 - the national executive secretary of the Working Party. . In this position, developed a temporary measure that saved the Norwegian fleet for the Allies after the German invasion in April 1940. In December 1940, was appointed Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, and in February 1941 - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway. Mr. Lee was elected a member of the Norwegian Parliament in 1936 and re-elected to Parliament in 1945. 12 June 1945 the Government, . to which he belonged, . resigned, Mr. Lee was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of the interim coalition cabinet, . which took over the powers, . and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the new government of the Working Party in October 1945.,

. Mr. Lee led the Norwegian delegation at the San Francisco Conference on International Organization in April 1945 and was Chairman of Commission III to develop the Charter provisions relating to the Security Council
. He also led the Norwegian delegation at the session of the General Assembly, held in London in January 1946. February 1, 1946, Mr. Lee was elected the first Secretary-General of the United Nations. It was officially inaugurated by the General Assembly at its twenty-second meeting on Feb. 2, 1946. November 1, 1950, the General Assembly extended the term of Mr. Lee for another three years - from February 1, 1951. Mr. Lee resigned from the post of Secretary-General of the United Nations in November 1952.

. After retiring from the United Nations, Mr. Lee has held the following positions: Governor of Oslo and Akershus, Chairman of the Norwegian Council on Energy
. In 1958, the General Assembly in its resolution appealed to the King of Norway Olaf with a request to find a basis on which Ethiopia and Italy would proceed with the settlement of border disputes involving former Italian colony of Somalia. In 1959, King Olav asked Mr. Lee to serve as mediator.
