Biography LEE Marius Sophus (Lie Marius Sophus)
(1842-1899) Born December 17, 1842 in Nordfordeyde. Since 1872 - professor at the University of Christiania (Oslo) in 1886-1896 - Professor of University of Leipzig. The first of Lee treated purely geometrical issues. In 1870, he introduced a so-called. contact transformations, allowing to establish a bijection between the set of spheres and a set of direct. Most of his life devoted to the theory of Lie groups and its applications to other areas of mathematics, especially to the theory of differential equations. Lee - the creator of the classical theory of continuous groups, now called the theory of Lie groups. This theory has had a profound influence on the development of the grounds of geometry, topology, theoretical physics. Lee died in Christiania on Feb. 18, 1899.
