Stradivari violin goes for 1.27 million dollars
A violin made by legendary 18th century Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari was sold at auction in New York Friday for 1.27 million dollars.
The violin, known as "The Penny" after its previous owner, English violinist Barbara Penny, who died last year, was expected to reach between 1.0 million and 1.5 million dollars at the Christie`s auction.
The record for a "Strad" stands at 3.5 million dollars, set at auction in New York in May 2006 for the "Hammer," named after Christian Hammer, an 19th century Swedish collector.
Stradivari worked in Cremona, Italy, making harps and guitars as well as violins until he died in 1737. He is believed to have made more than 1,100 instruments, of which some 650 have been preserved.
