Herring holiday in Helsinki
Every year in the beginning of October a herring fair is held in Helsinki.
Trawlers and fisher boats filled with herring and sprat, which came to coastal waters because of water temperature decrease in sea, gather in Helsinki port for a fair with the last catch of current year.
Every day on Market square there will be sales of herring cooked in various ways - salted, lightly salted, under marinade, with onions, with mustard and fennel. Everyone can try herring in exotic marinade which contains lemon, ashberries, pepper and garlic. Herring is the best with local wheat bread.
This fisherman holiday has a long history. The license on fair was given by Swedish royal decree in the frames of peace treaty in Turku in 1743. A fair became an important event, the prices on salted and marinade fish all over the country were set here.
This year a herring fair will be from October 2 to October 8.
