Australia argues about same-sex marriage

The Australian Parliament failed in a national referendum on the issue of same-sex marriages, potentially delaying marriage equality in the country for many years. Despite the fact that a vote for gay marriage, the left opposition Labor party officially announced Tuesday that he would not support the planned national voice of the government.

They say that a public vote is not necessary, it will cause strife, public debate, which could injure young gays and lesbians. Instead, the opposition parties want same-sex marriage was passed by the Parliament - government conservatives to turn against it.

Because of these nuances of the gay community in Australia remains without legal rights. Without the support of the labour party, the government will have enough votes in the Australian Senate for the approval of the national vote. The government wanted to hold a national plebiscite, similar to the referendum in February of next year, at a price of about $120 million.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said that if the plebiscite was not held, the marriage equality may not be removed from the agenda until 2019, when it will host the next General election. However, one of the best known gay politicians of Australia supports the rejection of the plebiscite and are willing to wait for gay marriage in Australia.

"No other human rights issue is not put to the vote in Australia," said Andrew Barr, chief Minister of the Australian capital territory CNN. Many Western countries, including New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States, legalized same-sex marriage in recent years. The majority of Australians support same-sex marriage, according to recent polls of public opinion Essential.

Major party leaders in Australia - labor party leader bill shorten and Malcolm Turnbull, who is the first Prime Minister of Australia support same-sex marriage while in power.

Same-sex marriage has been banned in Australia since 2004, when former Prime Minister John Howard changed the marriage Act in Australia to allow only heterosexual couples to marry.
