In Baghdad in the maternity ward died infants
At least 11 children died during a fire in the maternity ward of a hospital in Baghdad early Wednesday, said the Ministry of health of Iraq. Infants who were in hospital during the fire, died of suffocation, said the press Secretary of the Ministry.
Preliminary report of civil defense indicates that the fire was caused by a short circuit.
Amateur footage of scenes that have been circulated on social media showed, as families congregate outside the maternity ward. Other footage showed firefighters entering the charred, water-soaked building, and ambulances that took the victims to other hospitals for treatment.
Twenty-nine women were taken to hospital on Tuesday evening. All of them were transferred to other hospitals in the Iraqi capital. Officials cordoned off the maternity ward on Wednesday. Burnt incubators can be seen outside the hospital buildings. Yarmouk is one of the major hospitals of Baghdad, is located in the Western part of the city.
In social media, the fire caused a new outpouring of anger at the government, people blame incompetent management, wear and tear to the infrastructure of the country and its apparent inability to protect citizens. "In the new Iraq, people do not live more than a couple hours," wrote one Twitter user. "We never heard that Parliament or the President's office burned down, the only institution where the poor people" wrote another.
Another Twitter user said that people upset about the death of babies "they should know that" every day more people die because of the negligence of the Ministry of health. "Some called for the resignation of the health Minister of the country. "Their corruption has reached children just a few hours ago," wrote another Twitter user.
