Syrian democratic forces destroyed a wall around Raqqa
U.S.-backed Syrian democratic forces (SDF) broke down the wall around the Old city of Raqqa on Monday, said in a statement, U.S. Central command.
Syrian democratic forces to use the historic wall as a fighting position and laid mines and improvised explosive devices in the wall, said in a statement Central command (CENTCOM). "Coalition forces supported the promotion of the SDF in the most heavily fortified part of Raqqa, opening two small passage in the wall Rafiki, which surrounds the Old town," said (CENTCOM).
According to Syrian state media, Rafiki wall surrounds the Old city of raqqa in the South-Eastern part of the city. The wall is approximately 5 km (3.1 miles) in length, 3.8 m (12.4 ft) in height and 1 m in thickness, said Syrian state media in 2009. Wall Rafiki is about 3 km from the city centre.
The U.S. envoy to the coalition against ISIS Brett Mcguirk said that the operation on Monday, the SDF has become a "key milestone in the campaign to liberate the city". SDF launched an offensive to capture the city of raqqa on 6 June. More than 3 years Raqqa ISIL has used as a platform for their deadly attacks on the middle East and abroad.
The capture of Raqqa would be a major achievement in the battle against ISIS. If ISIS is expelled from Raqqa, he will lose the last remnant of any "control" of their so-called Caliphate.
