Art of the ad: old posters on display in Moscow
Advertising posters are everywhere these days. We are stalked by the world`s biggest corporations and smallest companies to consume their products and attend events. But advertising dates a long way back, to when creating ad posters was an art.
The State Tretyakov Gallery has opened a display that reveals Russian posters, from the turn of the 20th Century. One of the earliest examples of advertising posters at the exhibition is a sketch of a poster announcing a display by Russian and Finnish artists created by artist and illustrator Konstantin Somov. This work dates back to 1897.
The exibit features works by such artists as Konstantin Korovin, a leading Russian Impressionist, painter and graphic artist Pavel Kuznetsov, avant-garde painter Mikhail Larionov, prominent female avant-garde artist Natalya Goncharova and many other significant representatives of the Russian art scene of the early 20th Century.
The display is divided into several thematic sections dedicated to exhibitions, literature, culture events, and social issues. Many of the posters on display have been restored for this exhibition.
The collection of print and hand-drawn posters created around the dawn of the 20th Century was brought into the light from the museum`s storerooms. A major part of it, some 100 works will be displayed to a wide audience for the very first time.
The exhibition is on through the end of summer.
