Moscow Film Festival announces its program


The main cinema event is set to kick off in the capital. The 33rd annual Moscow International Film Festival, which will run from June 23 through July 2, has announced its program for this summer.

Some 17 films have been selected to be screened within the program of the MIFF this year.

Among the newcomers of the film industry is the former Czech president Vaclav Havel, who re-trained as playwright and a director. His debut work Leaving is partially autobiographical. The main character resigns from the post of chancellor and leaves his residence, where he had spent quite a few years. The film was premiered in the Czech Republic in March this year.

A director from Poland, Feliks Falk, is heading to Moscow with his drama Joanna, about the everyday struggle for life in the German-occupied Warsaw in the midst of World War II. Another Polish director, Barbara Sass, with her In the Name of the Devil, takes an insightful look into the difficulties of life inside a nunnery.

French director Pascal Arnold, in co-operation with Jean-Marc Barr, will represent their country with American Translation, a beautiful love story of two 20-year-olds, with the boy turning out to be a killer. A joint French-Spanish production, Escalation, based on the Russian play Dear Elena Sergeevna by Lyudmila Razumovskaya, is also on the menu.

The competition program also features Georgian Levan Tutberidze`s I`ll Die Without You; The Perfect Life from Italian director Lucio Pellegrini; Serbian production Montevideo, Taste of a Dream from Dragan Bjelogrlić; the Japanese Postcard from Kaneto Shindô; a co-production between Hungary, Romania, Sweden Retrace, directed by Judit Elek; Wong Ching Po`s Revenge: A Love Story from Hong Kong; Serdtsa Boomerang from Russian Nikolay Khomeriki; the almost four-hour-long Chapiteau-Show from Russian Sergey Loban; Bulgarian Sneakers; Tabou - The Soul Is Stranger on Earth, a joint production between Austria, Germany and Luxembourg by director Christoph Stark; The Other Family from Mexican Gustavo Loza; and Spanish The Waves from Alberto Morais.

The film marathon will open with Michael Bay`s Transformers: Dark of the Moon, starring Shia LaBeouf, John Malkovich and John Turturro. The screening in Moscow will become the world premiere of the third part of the famous blockbuster series. It will go on show in Europe on June 29. The USA and Canada will see the film starting from July 1.
