Missing Islamic Institute head not reporting for questioning
Nalchik, November 9 - Ruslan Nakhushev, director of the non-registered Institute of Islamic Studies in Nalchik, did not report for questioning to the Federal Security Service (FSB) department for Kabardino-Balkaria on Tuesday, a department source told Interfax.
Under an agreement reached with him on November 4, Nakhushev was supposed to report to the FSB department with his lawyer at 2:00 p.m. November 8 to testify in a criminal case against him on charges of encouraging terrorism.
"However, he did not report today. It is now up to the prosecutors to decide his future. If he is entered on a wanted list, we will search for him. If he turns himself in, we will conduct an investigation in line with the law," he said.
Meanwhile, Susanna Varitlova, a manager at the NVF-Elbrus firm headed by Nakhushev told Interfax on Tuesday that she had no information on his whereabouts.
Nakhushev is a former FSB career officer. He earlier worked for the Alexander Lebed Peacekeeping Mission, which was involved in the search and release of hostages in the North Caucasus.
Nakhushev recently founded the Institute of Islamic Studies in Nalchik, which he himself described as a bridge between the official Muslim clergy and radical Islamic youths.
