Mass illness in Chechnya caused by intensive psychic and emotional strain
Mass illness in Chechnya is caused by intensive psychic and emotional strain, which lead to "conversion spasms". This is the final diagnosis, put by the commission, headed by the deputy director of the Serbsky?s Forensic Psychiatry Institute Zurab Kikalidze. "These are conversion spasms С-44.5", told Kikalidze to journalists on Friday. He emphasized, that the illness cause is extremely intensive psychic and emotional strain, affecting the republic inhabitants for a long time. "Most of the affected are children and teenagers, especially girls", said Kikalizde. In his opinion, mass character of illness was caused by the effect of psychological infection. "The effect of psychological infection snapped into action, when one person feels bad, this state passes to another one, then to the third and so on. And as a result, syncope and spasms appear", said Kikalidze. He believes long-term measures are needed to solve these problems. "The concept of psychological and social rehabilitation of the republic population on the whole must be developed", he said. According to him, this must be a policy assumed for many years, but not an interim measure. "And it must be put into practice", he said. "Economics is certainly important, but it is interpreted through human psyche. Present situation proves the need to take appropriate measures, otherwise no rehabilitation, no psychological integration is possible", said Kikalidze.
