Kalmykia to celebrate New Year on December 26
December 26, 2005, the National Kalmyk Day Zul is declared a day off by the President Kirsan Ilumzhinov?s decree, informed the Republic president?s press-cutting service. "Zul for Buddhists symbolizes the beginning of a New Year", told Presidential press-secretary Buyancha Galzanov. He explained, that every year celebration date is determined by Buddhist monks according to the lunar calendar. Galzanov also told, that a new khurul to be open on December 27. The central place in Buddhist temple is to be occupied by the biggest Buddha statue in Europe, assembled in Volgodonsk in Rostov region. This statue has been reported the first Buddha statue made of fiber glass, representing sitting Buddha, and it?s much lighter of the analogous statues. The Day of Remembrance and Sorrow is to be commemorated on December 28. "this is the day of Calmyk people deportation," mentioned Galzanov.
