Armenian authorities not to pay for gas by "Gazprom" rate
The head of Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Vardan Oskanyan announced that suggested price for Russian gas at level of $110 for thousand of cubic meters is unacceptable.
He specified that compromise decision will not sufficiently influence living standards of Armenian population and rates of economic growth in republic.
Armenia expected that good relationships with Russia will provide low prices on energy resources. At the same time vice-president of "Gazprom" Alexander Medvedev stated that gas price for all Transcaucasian countries will amount to $110 for thousand of cubic meters and political unions will not be taken into consideration. The same prices on gas will be suggested to Georgia and Azerbaijan.
As a result of long negotiations Armenia gained postponement of prices` rise till April 1. Moreover, Yerevan decided to speed up construction of Iranian-Armenian pipeline, which will allow to get gas by autumn of 2006.
Earlier, during meeting in Sochi Vladimir Putin informed Armenian leader that he is not able to influence decision of "Gazprom". Russian side suggested Armenia to cover expenses by giving interest-free credit in amount of $88 millions, but Armenia rejected the suggestion. Then Russia suggested purchase of 5-th power-generating unit of Razdansky fuel and energy station and all gas transport system of republic in exchange on old prices for gas.
From their turn Armenian officials noted that Armenia can demand rent for dislocation of Russian military base on territory of Armenia. "In condition of high prices on gas it will be hard to answer the question why Armenia doesn`t collect payment for base", - announced speaker of Armenian parliament in the end of December.
