Phenol slick goes down the Yug river to Veliky Ustyug
On January 23 phenol release to the river Yug occurred in Kirov region, reports the Russian Federation Environment Ministry press-release. What makes the matter worse is that downstream on the territory of Vologda region there is a water supply point belonging to Veliky Ustyug town.
Water samples taken in the area of Demianovo village (Kirov region) sho wed the level of phenol concentration 24 times exceeding maximum concentration limit (maximum concentration limit for ponds of fish industry is 0,001mg/l).
As to January 24, phenol concentration in water has reduced to 2 maximum concentration limits, says the press-release.
Demianovo inhabitants have been informed about the accident. According to provisional data, phenol got into the river Yug together with wastewater from LLC "Poleko"manifold. This is the company, which released to the river 23,5 kg of phenol in 2004.
Specialists of Federal Service for Monitoring Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare, Federal Service for Water Sources Monitoring and Federal Service for Environment Monitoring are carrying out water quality monitoring.
