Head of Central Election Committee suggests increasing number of women-politicians
On February 11, Saturday the chairman of Central Election Committee Alexander Veshnyakov suggested establishing a norm, according to which presence of women in the voting list of a party is necessary, and their number must constitute no less that a third of total list staff.
The head of CEC underlined, that he didn`t consider this norm to be a quota arrangement. "These are additional guarantees for women", noted he.
There are 45 women in present State Duma, which is 10%. Most women in Duma represent the fraction "United Russia", there are 30 women.
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the necessity of women`s active participation in public management in 2003. "Legislative authorities begin operating efficiently and effectively solving social protection problems, if there are over 20 % of women working", underlined he, and expressed the readiness to attract women to the work of Government.
Answering journalists` questions, Veshnyakov admitted, that present State Duma is hardly ready to accept such an innovation.
At the same time, most Russians support the idea of gender quota for women in parties voting lists.
According to the poll made in April 2005, 60% of 1600 interviewed supported this idea, only 28 % expressed negative attitude, and 12% couldn`t give any opinion.
