French UNO ex-ambassador arrested
On Tuesday in Paris was arrested ex-ambassador of France under UNO Security Committee Jean-Bernard Merimee.
68-year old Merimee was arrested on suspicion of connection to corruptional scandal around UNO program "Gasoline in exchange for food". From 1999 to 2002 Merimee worked in position of Kofi Annan`s special advisor of European questions.
Program "Gasoline in exchange for food" started in 1996 after applications of economical sanctions regarding Iraq. Iraq got food and medicine in exchange for petroleum delivery. In 2003 realization of program was stopped.
Independent Committee under leadership of Paul Volker investigated accomplishment of this program and came to the conclusion that Iraq ex-president Saddam Hussein gave contracts on petroleum purchase only to those companies which countries denied UNO sanctions against Iraq after its invasion to Kuwait in 1990.
Also Committee revealed that many officials of UNO used this program in an effort of self-enrichment. Arrested in August 2005 Russian Aleksandr Yakovlev admitted his guilt in swindle during electronic money transfer and money-laundering within the bounds of program "Gasoline in exchange for food" realization.
