Track and field world championship opens in sport complex "Olympic"
Opening ceremony of world championship for track and field athletics took place in Moscow sport complex "Olympic" on Saturday.
After performance with participation of air gymnasts and demonstration of laser show officials delivered a speech to sportsmen. The head of Federal agency for physical training and sport Vyacheslav Fetisov read greetings of Russian president Vladimir Putin.
Then Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov appealed to sportsmen and guests. He noted that brightest stars of world track and field athletics are invited to Moscow competitions. "Sportsmen arrived to frosty but hearty Moscow from 129 countries. A heart of world track and field athletics rhythmically beats in this hall", - said Luzhkov. He wished participants of competitions "brilliant achievements" in Moscow world championship.
From his turn, president of All-Russian Federation of track and field athletics Valentine Balakhnichev reminded that "national athletics has a century long history".
After Yuri Luzhkov declared 11-th track and field world championship opened, People`s artist of Russia Nadezhda Babkina sang national anthem.
