Embryonic stem cell fights cancer
Researchers from Minnesota University converted human embryonic stem cells into immune cells - "natural killers" which destroy cancer cells.
Group under leadership of Dan Kaufman from Stem cell institute under Minnesota University managed to create from embryonic stem cells NK-cells (natural killers) which are a special subpopulation of lymphocytes being in healthy human blood and protecting human from infections and some kinds of cancer.
It turned out during experiments that obtained "killers" can destroy certain kinds of cancer cells in vitro. Sooner or later real oncological illnesses, especially leucaemia and lymphoma, can be cured by this method.
"This investigation proves that embryonic stem cells can be used as source of immune cells which can attack and destroy cancer cells and perhaps struggle with various infections", - thinks doctor Kaufman.
Now American scientists prepare experiments on animals.
