Marti was born on January 28, 1853 in Havana, where he received his early education. In the 15 years he has published several of his poems, and at 16 - started their own newspaper "La patria libre" ( "Free Fatherland"). During the revolutionary uprising that erupted in Cuba in 1868, he openly sympathized with the insurgents, for which he was sentenced to six months of hard work, and in 1871 was deported to Spain. There he continued his education and literary work, having received in 1874 the title of Master of Arts and a degree in law from the University of Zaragoza. Several subsequent years he spent in France, Mexico and Guatemala. Martö´ returned to Cuba only in 1878.
