He lived in Brazil since 1808. In 1821 he was appointed regent of Brazil. Under pressure from the movement for independence on Sept. 7, 1822 proclaimed the independence of Brazil, declaring e Á•³ constitutional monarchy. October 12, 1822 was e Á•³ Emperor. Established a despotic regime that brutally suppressed the republican movement, encouraged the penetration of British capital. Hence, the influence exerted on state affairs with
Pedro I of reaction, the Portuguese nobility. In an atmosphere of general dissatisfaction, which grew in Rio de Janeiro in early April 1831 in a popular uprising,
Pedro I on April 7 ref Á•³ ksya abdicate in favor of his infant son,
Pedro II, and drove for a while in the UK.
