SOVIET composer, teacher, musical and public figure. People's Artist of the USSR (1954). Academician of the Armenian SSR (1963). Doctor of Art (1965). Hero of Socialist. Labor (1973). Member of the CPSU since 1943. In 1929 he graduated from the College of Music. Gnessins (worked on songs with M. F. Gniessin), in 1934 - the Moscow Conservatory N. YA. Myaskovsky (composition), R. M. Glier, C. N. Vasilenko (instrumentation). In 1939-48 Deputy Chairman of the Organizing Committee, since 1957 secretary of the Union of Soviet Composers. From 1950 he taught at Musical-Pedagogical Institute. Gnesinyh in 1951 (both) - in the Moscow Conservatory (since 1951 Professor). Among the students: P. G. Boiko H. K. Gabunia, A. Vieira (Romania), E. S. Oganesyan, M. L. Tariverdiev, E. A. Hagagortyan, A. YA. Eshpai. Since 1950, performed in concerts as a conductor in the USSR and abroad with the execution of his own compositions. Lenin Prize (1959), USSR State Prize (1941, 1943, 1946, 1950, 1971), State Prize of the Armenian SSR (1965).
In the work Xachaturyana originality implemented traditions of world and national musical art. His music has enriched the modern school of composing new images, stylistic elements, means of musical expression. Xachaturyan achieved organic synthesis tonal system of European music with modal structures of the Eastern musical culture, mainly Armenian. The main attention to the symphony and chamber instrumental genres. Artworks typical open expressiveness, melodic generosity, intonational accessibility. An important role played by the rhythm, performing dramatic function. Xachaturyan - master of orchestral color. Xachaturyan fruitfully worked in music for theater and film (music for productions of 'Masquerade' Lermontov 'The Valencian Widow' Lope de Vega, which used the Spanish melodies and rhythms, to the films 'Pepo', 'Zangezur', etc.). Composer national anthem of the Armenian SSR (1944). Written articles for magazines devoted to the creative activity of a number of musicians.
