. After serving four years in the Marines during the Second World War, he became interested in theater and worked his way from amateur college productions to the Broadway stage.

After a number of roles on TV made its debut in film in the western, 'Wood for the Hanged' (The Hanging Tree, . 1959) and in the same year played the role of the prosecutor in the judicial drama Otto Premindzhera 'Anatomy of a Murder' (Anatomy of a Murder), . was nominated for Oscar for supporting actress,
