Born in the village of Anatole, now Brest in Belarus. He graduated from the Music and Drama School of the Moscow Philharmonic Society (1902). In 1902-1905 - actor 'Association of the new drama' led in. E. Meyerhold, in 1905 - Theater at Cook's studio, in 1905-1913 - Theater Kostroma, Tiflis, Kharkov, Rostov-on-Don, Riga, in 1913-1915 - the troupe under the direction of H. N. Sinel'nikova in Kharkov. In the cinema since 1916.
People's Artist of the RSFSR (1932).
