Biography Duarte, Juan Pablo (Juan Pablo Duarte)
In 1838, together with F. Sanchez del Rosario and R.M. Meley created a secret patriotic society "La Trinitarians, which had as its aim the liberation of the Haitian domination. After independence in 1844 was proclaimed by the President, but the general seized power P. Santana, and Duarte was forced to leave their homeland. Duarte opposed the occupation of the Dominican Republic by Spanish troops (1861-65) and in 1864 he returned to his homeland to participate in the fight against Spanish colonial rule. Soon he was sent on a diplomatic mission to Venezuela, where he died. Duarte remains were moved to Santo Domingo in 1884.
