Jose Miguel Carrera was born in Santiago, Chile, then a colony of Spain. He was one of the first fighters for the independence of Chile. When in 1810 because of the weakness of Spain, occupied Napolonom, the people of Chile declared the independence of the country and Carrera became the first president of the Republic of Chile. In 1814, loyal to Spain, the Peruvian army invaded in Chile. At the head of the Chilean army stood by Bernardo O'Higgins, but his leadership was not too successful and was handed over to his main political opponent - Jose Miguel Carrera. In October 1814, at Rancagua, Chile Patriots were defeated in a battle with the Peruvian Army. During the next three years the country was occupied by the royalists. At this time, Carrera, sought help, first in Buenos Aires, and then, in 1815, the United States. In 1816 he returned to Argentina, but to return to Chile, he was unable to. He assisted local Argentine revolutionaries. During one of these operations in 1821, Jose Carrera, was kidnapped and killed.
