Biography VELICHKO Samuel V.
Fragmentary biographical information about Velichko relate to his service in the military office, which after the disaster struck Kochubei he had to leave (1708). Settling the estate of his son, Velichko engaged in teaching and literary works. Died Velichko no earlier than October 1728, Mr.. The main product Velichko - the so-called "Chronicle of events in the South-West of Russia in the XVII century." - Combines weather form of the chronicle narratives with the nature of academic work. He wrote his work not only on the basis of personal memories and stories of others: he turned to writing and, . and print processing of events (Polish Chronicles, . Polish writers, . German historian Puffendorf, . "Synopsis" Gizel), . to the literature relating to their church ( "Treasury" Golyatovskogo) and poetic (Twardowski and others), . to the Little-Russian records ( "reestriki", . "Cossack Chronicle, . written in the Pereyaslavl in 1636, . "Diariush" C, . Zorki etc.), to sources of documentary. Getting Velichko with the literature and sources of the issue was reflected in frequent references and quotations, documents, he often even entirely. Velichko is not free from the compilation, sometimes unintelligible, which in itself indicates a lack of critical work (пїпЎпЁпЎ in one source not found, Toe from another dopolnilem "- recognized Velichko). Reassessing the historic significance of poetry, Velichko unwittingly fell into a significant error. Inconsistency of the critical point of view found in its relation to documentary sources (there are, apparently, false), and to sources of the narrative (Velichko almost does not check their statements, though aware of his dependence on them). Critical attitude to the sources and could not, however, develop the student of the Kiev Academy, assimilated the methods of work, characteristic of the Latin-Polish education. Velichko sholastichen sometimes, he loves ornate and simple story painted so that he sometimes loses quite a resemblance to the fact described. So, without knowing the details of the attacks of Tatars in Lvov in 1670, Velichko described it to the appropriate pages of the "Jerusalem Delivered" T. Tasso. The existence of certain political trends also reduces the credibility of the work Velichko. Ardent patriot, a Ukrainian, he is far, however, from the anti-Moscow trends, often in his time. The enemy of the Poles, Velichko hero of native history finds B. Khmelnitsky, "second Moses". "Cossack Russian (Little-Russian) people" depicted, apparently, not without idealization. Hot love suffering homeland, some artistic presentation, sometimes humor give a special charm to his work. Language Velichko - the book, but unseasoned and spoiled kantselyarizmami and psevdokazacheyu speech. "Chronicle" was published in Kiev by the Commission for the parsing of Ancient Documents (Kiev, 1848 - 64) with defects in early, mid (1649 - 52) and at the end, as preserved in the publication of the lists used in the Pogodin (in Imperial St. Petersburg. Public Library) and Sudienka (or Poletika, in the library of the University of St. Vladimir). Currently, there are the best lists on which the Commission and involves re-release "Chronicle". Velichko still belongs to the German translation of "Cosmographia", equipped with a preface autobiographical content (not published). - See. VS.
