Samuel BUTLER (Butler Samuel)

(1612-1680)
Baptized Feb. 8, 1612 in Strenseme (Worcestershire). In 1663 published the first part of the poem Gudibras (Hudibras). The second part appeared in the following year, the third - in 1678. In this mock-heroic poem ridiculed the Puritans, derived in the images Gudibrasa, hypocritical quixotic knight and his squire Ralph. In some episodes of the poem also contains a satire on astrology, lawyers, and courtly love. For his daring poems Butler used a special iambic tetrameter, named 'gudibrasovoy stanzas'. The poem was a great success, and Butler briefly gained the recognition of the court. Butler, died Sept. 25, 1680, buried in the cemetery at the Cathedral of St.. Paul in London
