Biography GALLERIES Albrecht (Haller Albrecht von)
(1708-1777) Born October 16, 1708 in Bern. He studied at Tц?bingen and the University of Leiden, in 1727 received a medical degree. In 1727-1728 perfected in the field of medicine in Paris and Cambridge. In 1729-1736 worked as a municipal physician and keeper of the City Library in Bern. From 1736 to 1753 - Professor of the University of Gottingen. Since 1753 he lived and worked in Bern. The first scholarly work devoted to the flora of the Alps, Haller (1728), which he studied, traveled to the cantons of Switzerland. Haller also compiled an extensive bibliography on the anatomy and botany, is still not lost their importance, proposed a classification of plants based on the appearance of the plants and the structure of its fruit. The main direction of research Haller was associated with human physiology. The scientist studied the properties of muscle fibers: their resilience, the ability to decline during stimulation of the nerve or the muscle itself and return to its original state when the stimulus is removed. Galler has made additions to the teachings of William Harvey on blood circulation system, clarify the relationship of its various units. One of the first described the functioning of the organism as a whole. Investigated the anatomy of the human brain, described how it connected nerve fibers. He studied the work of the heart and especially the pulse.
A notable contribution to science was the eight-Haller work on general human physiology (Elementa Physiologiae Corporis Humani, 1757-1766), summarizing the facts and theories that related to the physiology. In 1743 Haller was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. As a member of the St. Petersburg, Paris and other science academies.
Haller gained fame as a poet, author of the poem the Alps (1729) and the representative of the early German Enlightenment.
Haller died in Bern on Dec. 12, 1777.
