Grove Karl Gilbert (Gilbert Grove Karl)

Born May 6, 1843 in Rochester (pc. New York). In 1862 he graduated from the University of Rochester. Since 1869 - Field geologist, Geological Survey of Ohio, since 1871 - Field, and since 1872 - Chief Geologist Service Wheeler. Held geomorphological study of the Far West, for which in 1872 received a master's degree. From 1879 he worked at the U.S. Geological Survey and conducted geological survey of the Rocky Mountains. One of the first investigated the relationship surface topography with the geological structure of the Earth. In 1884 he was appointed head of Appalachian Branch, and from 1889 to 1892 - chief geologist U.S. Geological Survey. Gilbert - author of government reports: Geology Henry Mountains (Geology of the Henry Mountains, 1877-1880); Bonwill lake (Lake Bonneville, 1890) and others. He was twice president of the U.S. Geological Survey, in 1900 was elected president of the American Association for the progress of science. Gilbert died in Jackson (pc. Michigan), May 1, 1918.
