Biography KARP Ugo da (Carpi, Ugo da)
(ca. 1455 or ca. 1480 - ca. 1523) Born in the town of Carpi, near Modena. Improved technique of making German woodcut, using a few wooden plates: one for the units, while others - for the transfer of various shades. Ugo da Carpi called his technique kyaroskuro (Italian. chiaro e scuro, 'light and shade'). The first known print, made in this technique dates back to 1518. The artist's works, the best of which - prints with works by Raphael and Parmigianino, in almost all major art collections. Died Ugo da Carpi in Rome ca. 1523.
