Biography Josö? Tadeo Monagas (Monagas Jos Tadeo)
(1784-1868) Mathurin was born in October 28, 1784. Participated in the War of Independence Spanish colonies. In 1830, when Venezuela seceded from Gran Colombia, became a member of the Constitutional Congress. In 1847, won the presidential election as the candidate of the Conservative Party led by General Josö? Antonio Paes. Once in power, entered into a compromise with the Liberals. In 1850, Paes revolt, but was defeated. In 1851 Monagas ceded the presidency to his brother, Josö? Gregorio Monagas. In 1855 once again became president. In 1857 Monagas increased the presidential term from 5 to 6 years, has introduced a law allowing the re-election, and reorganized the government to centralize power. These reforms have caused the resistance of all parliamentary factions, and in 1858 Monagas was forced to resign. In 1868 he again won the presidential election.
