Biography Olof Palm (Palme Olof)
(1927-1986) Born January 30, 1927 in Stockholm. After serving in the Army in 1948 went to Kenyon College (pc. Ohio). Many traveled to the U.S.. Returning to Sweden in 1951 received a doctorate in law at Stockholm University and entered politics. In 1956 he was elected to the Riksdag of the Social Democratic Party. In 1963 entered the Cabinet as minister without portfolio, in the next six years he held various ministerial posts. He is famous for his speeches against the U.S. war in Vietnam. In 1969, Palme became chairman of the Social-Democrats and Prime Minister of Sweden. Served with sharp criticism of U.S. policy during the Vietnam War. In 1976-1982 headed the Social Democratic Party, in opposition. He headed a commission to study the feasibility of establishing zones in Europe free of nuclear weapons, acted as a UN mediator during the Gulf War. In 1982, Palme once again became Prime Minister. Was killed in Stockholm on February 28, 1986.
