Andrew Jonathan Mestel figure in modern chess rare. He is one of the few players of high class, which is not being professional (in the full sense of the word) for several years showed excellent results. His rise had at the end of the seventies, when Britain was experiencing a real boom in chess. It was at this time in the British Isles a new galaxy of promising young players - Nunn, Spilmen, Mestel. Curiously, all three were brilliant in the best higher education institutions in the country and have considerable academic achievements. In short, it's chess generation of intellectuals, is not confined only to the game on 64 cells.

They formed the core of the famous England team, which was the main rival of the great team of the USSR in the eighties. By the way, for the team Mestel has always played a great. Many in the memory of a great game by Jonathan on 1984 Olympics. Professional chess players, he never became. For the past several years, Jonathan has taught at the University. Perhaps for Mestela, more than any other chess is something of a gentlemanly fun, intellectual tasks. Violent professionalism, the game with a hard eye on the result of it, in principle alien. It is no accident, Jonathan is one of the best solvers in the world (in 1986 he became an international master). This is more consistent with his philosophy of life. No extraneous factors (the identity of the enemy, sporting situation) does not zamutnyayut purity problems. We are less and less see Jonathan at the chessboard, and the results are not the same. New "hungry" generation chess pragmatists were forced out the dinosaurs intellectuals like Mestela. This Sporting Life. Yet a little sorry. Without such men as Jonathan chess world will fade a bit:
