Biography KORNELIOU Guy Gall (Gallus, Gaius Cornelius)
Gallus, Gaius Cornelius; Gallus, Gaius Cornelius, 69-26 years. BC. e., Roman poet. Born in the Forum Yulia in Gaul. He was educated in Rome, where during the study met Virgil. From the outset associated with Octavian, in 42 g. was a member of the commission for distribution of land to veterans, and in this post Virgil kept his estate near Mantua. G. participated in the war against Antony and Cleopatra, and after her death (30) became the new governor of the Roman province of Egypt. It appears that he was in office almost specific master. His act immortalized in the inscriptions on the island of Philae, on the pyramids at Giza and the obelisk, now standing on the square of St.. Peter's in Rome. For these and other reasons, Mr.. lost favor in August. Revoked at 26 g. Egypt accused of tons before the Senate, has committed suicide. From the poetry of Mr.. remained almost one verse. The most important of his works have been published about. 40 g. four books of elegies, which he dedicated to his beloved Liqueur (also known as Kiefer).

Also elegies G. wrote probably epilii. For example, he took in osnrovnom Evforiona, and Parfenov, with whom he was friendly, gathered for his mythological love stories in a dedicated G. prose work Erotika pathemata. Subject, style and mood of the poetry of Mr.. made of them something between neoterikami and poets avgustianskoy era. G. considered a true creator of the Roman subjective elegy, in which the poet expresses his feelings directly. The beginnings of this new literary genre, we can find more in Catullus, and G., seem to follow him. Followers D. were elegiac poet Ovid, Tibull, Propertius. Virgil G. admired, mentioning it in the eclogue VI and devoting his eclogue X. G. wrongly attributed epily preserved in Appendix Vergiliana.
