Updike, John (Updike, John) (p. 1932), American novelist, poet, essayist and literary critic. Born March 18, 1932 in Shillingtone (pc. Pennsylvania). He graduated from Harvard University (1954), following a year spent in England, studied art at Oxford, Ruskin School of. Back in the U.S., has begun working with the magazine 'New Yorker' (including as a cartoonist), continuing to this day. Updike's first book became a poetry collection "wooden chicken" (The Carpenter Hen, 1958), and the novel "Fair in the poorhouse" (The Poorhouse Fair, 1959) led to talk of him as a rising star.
