At least 55,000 Metallica fans filled the stadium in southwest Moscow
The show opened with the song Creeping Death, from the Ride the Lightning album, after the traditional introduction featuring a scene from a spaghetti Western and Ennio Morricone music.
The group last appeared in Moscow in 1991 at the Rock Monsters on the Barricades festival, along with AC/DC and Pantera.
At least 55,000 Metallica fans filled the stadium in southwest Moscow. Soldiers and riot police kept the crowd under control; although the main sponsor was beer-producer Tuborg, alcohol was banned.
The show lasted almost two and a half hours; Metallica stuck to familiar material, including classics Enter Sandman, Sad but True, Master of Puppets, and Nothing Else Matters.
