Russian soul most at home in kitchen: poll
Despite numerous upheavals, Russians remain loyal to one Soviet-era tradition: their fondness for gathering in the kitchen, according to an opinion poll published on Wednesday.
The kitchen is where 52 percent of Russians spend at least a third of their home life, with a hardcore of five percent who "practically never leave the kitchen," according to the poll by the Social Opinion centre, published by the Rossiiskaya Gazeta newspaper.
In austere Soviet times, the kitchen table was at the centre of existence for a population that had little spare cash and few opportunities in the communist economy to spend it.
Rossiiskaya Gazeta said that tradition remains strong.
"For a section of Russians the kitchen remains the main place for socialising, discussion and relaxation, not only for family members but for house guests," the daily newspaper said.
