Russia to play away against Italy in Fed Cup semis in April
MOSCOW, February 9 (RIA Novosti) - Defending Federation Cup champion Russia will face Italy on April 25-26 in the semifinals of the tournament following their flawless 5-0 victory over China in Moscow over the weekend.
In the quarterfinals the Russian squad, led by coach Shamil Tarpishchev, enjoyed straight sets victories in four singles matches on Saturday and Sunday, completing their confident winning march in doubles in three sets on Sunday.
The Russians are now set to travel in April to Italy, who also enjoyed a flawless victory at the weekend, beating France in Orleans 5-0.
In other quarterfinal encounters the Czech Republic defeated at home last year`s finalists from Spain 4-1, while the United States had a tough game at home against Argentina, snatching victory in the final doubles game to reach the semifinals 3-2.
Russia has won the Fed Cup trophy four out of the last five tournaments (2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008). A win this year would bring the country level with Spain and the Czech Republic on five victories, behind only Australia`s seven titles and the 17 of the United States.
