GM, Ford suspend production in Russia over crisis
Global automakers General Motors and Ford on Wednesday suspended production at their car plants in Russia over weak demand for vehicles, the companies said.
Carmakers in Russia have encountered difficulties over rising prices for auto parts and other supplies and declining sales.
The Ford factory in the town of Vsevolozhsk near Russia`s second city of St. Petersburg, which produces Ford Focus and Mondeo cars, is halting production for six business days until July 9, a spokesman said.
GM`s auto factory near St. Petersburg announced on Monday it would suspend production from July 1 to August 31 over declining demand on the Russian market.
"We have analyzed the situation on the Russian market and came to the conclusion that there is no need for the expansion of production," press secretary Yulia Bocharova said.
