Jennie Garth was "very resistant" to splitting from her husband
The 39-year-old actress was upset when her spouse Peter Facinelli - with who she has daughters Luca, 14, Lola, nine, and five-year-old Fiona - announced he wanted a divorce and says she struggled to come to terms with the end of her 10-year marriage.
She said: "I was very resistant. I didn`t want it to happen. It took me some time to come to peace with it."
Jennie admits the constant separations between herself and `Twilight Saga` star Peter, who was away filming in Vancouver and New York, were particularly hard on their marriage.
She added in an interview with People magazine: "He would do everything he could to fly back every weekend. But it took a real toll on our marriage."
The actress feels she has now gone through her "darkest" times and is looking ahead to the future.
She said: "I`ve gone through my darkest parts and I`m coming out of it.
"I`m OK. I don`t know what the future holds, but then I`ve never been a planner. And maybe that`s a good thing."
Peter and Jennie - who first met on the set of TV movie `An Unfinished Affair` in 1996 and married five years later - announced the end of their marriage in a statement earlier this month.
They said: "While we have decided to end our marriage, we both share the same deep love and devotion to our children. We remain dedicated to raising our beautiful daughters together. We ask for privacy and respect during this time."
