Saint-Petersburg waits for professional fencers
November, 18 - The press-conference devoted to choice of the city for the world championship for fencing took place in Saint-Petersburg.
The vice-president of Russian Association of Fencing Yury Bichkov told journalists about problems occurred during the meeting devoted to choice of the city.
"Two years ago we applied for holding the world championship for fencing in 2005. Two other countries: Germany and Italy claimed to organize the championship that year too. We made an agreement, according to which Germany had a right to hold the championship in 2005, Italy would invite the best fencers in 2006, and Russia would have a chance to receive guests in 2007, in Saint-Petersburg."
By Bichkov`s words, the president of FIE Rene Rok opposed the idea about Saint-Petersburg. According to him the Bulgarian city Plovdiv was supposed to get the right of the championship in 2007.
However, Russian officials of Fencing Association persuaded chiefs of National Fencing Federations to let Saint-Petersburg hold the world championship in 2007.
