Tickets for U.S.-Russia Fed Cup semis sold out in record time
All tickets for the United States-Russia semifinal encounter of the 2007 Federation Cup, the unofficial world women`s tennis team championship, have been sold out within nine days.
The United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced Thursday that it will enlarge the capacity of the Stowe`s Topnotch Resort and Spa stadium in the state of Vermont, which will host the encounter July 14-15, from the current 3,000 to 4,100 seats.
The American association said it was the fastest home sell-out for the U.S. Fed Cup team since a 2003 quarterfinal tie with the Czech Republic in Lowell, Massachusetts, when the Americans defeated the Czechs 5-0.
Both the Russian and American teams reached the semifinals after stunning 5-0 victories in the quarterfinal round against the teams from Spain and Belgium, respectively.
The U.S. currently has an impressive 4-1 winning record over the Russian team in Federation Cup frames. But it was Russia that triumphed in the last semifinal encounter in Moscow in 2005, despite the presence of Venus William on the U.S. squad, who had just won Wimbledon the week before.
