Kropivnitskaya Leo

1922, Tyumen - 1994, Moscow. Since 1923, Mr.. lived in Moscow. He studied in 1939-46 (excluding war years) in the Moscow Institute of applied and decorative arts from A. Deineka. Member of the Great Patriotic War (1941-44), a prisoner of the Gulag (1946-54, rehabilitated in 1956). Exhibitions since 1958. Member of USSR Union of Artists since 1973. Recognized as the leader of the artistic life of Moscow 1950-80-ies, the first Soviet abstractionist. Starting with abstract expressionism in the 1960's Kropyvnytskyi come to some kind of conventional objectivity, but in the late 1980's again periodically returns to the picturesque abstraction. Works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, Kaliningrad Art Gallery, Art Museum of the Far East, Khabarovsk; Zimmerly Art Museum, New Brunswick, USA, museums and private collections in Russia, the United States, Israel and many European countries.
