John Hunt Morgan was born on 1 st June 1825 in the town of Huntsville, Alabama, but still in its infancy, was taken by parents in Lexington, Kentucky, and since then has always considered the home state of Kentucky. He, being the eldest of six children, able to get a decent education in the local Transylvanian college, but this prevented the scandalous duel. Morgan, a volunteer went to the Mexican War, where he earned the rank of First Lieutenant 1 st Ketukkiyskogo Regiment and distinguished himself in the Battle of Buena Vista. After the war he started producing hemp in Lexington and trade, inherited from his grandfather. It was then that he married the first time - the sister of his business partner (his wife fell ill and died at the beginning of the war).

When state authorities supported the Union and issued a warrant for the arrest of Morgan unreliable, he was in October 1861 the service went south with his creation before the war, his company "Lexington Rifles". In April 1862 after a successful command of the 2 nd Kentucky Cavalry during operations in central Kentucky and in the battle of Shiloh he was promoted to the rank of colonel. A series of raids in Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio brought him a special thanks to the confederate government in the North and created a panic fear of the ubiquitous "Morgan's men". Raids by Morgan and his romantic image of the knight inspired Southerners and led to the horror of the Yankees. For his services he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general and was promoted to commander of the Department of West Virginia and East Tennessee. In February 1862, when John Hunt Morgan led his troops into winter quarters at Murfreesboro, he met Mattie Redi and her family. After a brief period of courtship in March 1862, John and Matt got engaged, and in December the same year held their weddings, and espoused the young general himself, Leonidas Polk. Immediately after his marriage, Morgan went to another raid, this time successfully blow up several vital northern bridges and bringing in a complete mess of the federal army's supply lines, General Rozenkransa. North was damaged in excess of 10 million dollars, the railways in the raid were taken out of service for almost five weeks, and 7 300 soldiers of the Federal Army were forced to chase Morgan. For the sake of historical justice is to say that many successes Morgan largely owed its officers - first and foremost, Basil Duke and Adam Rankin Johnson.

On the hunt for Morgan went to considerable force of regular cavalry, the Yankees and the local militia, which captured and Morgan and most of his men on July 26 near the town of New Lisbon in Ohio. He was placed in state prison, from which it made a daring escape on Nov. 27, 1863, the same day back in Tennessee, his wife gave birth to a daughter, which, however, died soon. John Hunt Morgan, after his escape arranged his headquarters in Greenville, Tennessee, and decided to recruit new volunteers, while continuing the overall command of Confederate forces in East Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. On the night of 3rd September 1864 in Greenville stormed by the Yankees, disguised as Confederate. Caught off guard, Morgan tried to escape but was shot in the back.
