Barbosa de Oliveira Rui Caetano

Brazilian statesman and politician, lawyer, journalist, historian, one of the founders (1897) and member of the Brazilian Academy of Literature. Actively participated in the abolitionist movement in Brazil, played for the elimination of slavery through gradual reforms. In 1889 he joined the Republican Party (founded in 1869). After the overthrow of the monarchy, the Minister of Finance and Justice (1889-91). Participated in the drafting of the Brazilian Constitution of 1891. In 1893 was accused of plotting against President F. Peixoto, emigrated to Argentina. Upon returning to Brazil - Senator (1895-1923). In 1909 and 1919 to run for the presidency of the Liberal Party.
